Eliminating Red Eye

This tutorial will show you how to use PSP to eliminate the red eye from your digital camera.

(This tutorial was written by me and any similarity between this and any other is purely coincidental. I mean, we all use PSP and we all pretty much use it in the same way...right?)

Let's get started. Right click and download this to your desktop. Then open up PSP.
Thank you Wilma for letting me use the picture of his good lookin' man of yours!

This picture is a little dark, so I used One Step Foto Fix on it....and it now looks like this:

Wow...now those eyes really look devilish! Go to Adjust/Red-Eye Removal. A window pops open that looks like this:

Make sure you 1) reset the settings and 2) click on the eyes so you can see on the original what happens as you do your changes. This tool is just a matter of playing with the various settings until you get the desired effect. In the left hand pane, I like to get really close to the eyes so I can see what I'm doing. Let's start with 200%...click on the plus magnifying glass to get there. Then, in the right hand pane, hover your cursor over it and you will see a little hand. Use this to move the picture so your eyes are centered.

First thing I want you to do is pull down the Method menu. You can see your choices here. Human eye, animal eye, free hand and point to point. Let's stick with the Auto Human Eye method for now. The very first thing I do is go to the left hand pane and, holding down the left hand mouse button, draw a circle. Don't worry if you get it too big or too small. You can adjust that by pulling or pushing the corners. Place the circle over Terry's left eye (right eye in the picture). Look in the right hand pane and you can see what it looks like. Make sure the circle is NOT over the eye lid.; If you need to make it smaller or bigger, go ahead and do so. We just want it over the red part. This is what you should now have based on the default setting:

Doesn't look too bad, but it's a little flat. No sparkle in his eye. Put a checkmark on Center Glint. Here is where you are on your own. You might want to refer back to this picture as you play with each of the settings to remember where they were.  Play with the feather, taking it up, up, up and watch what it does. Do the same for blur. The do the glint size, and the iris size. Now, choose a color for Terry's eyes. I tried to give him green eyes, but it looked too spooky! So I stuck with grey.. he is hard to distinguish between the blue and the grey. Here is what I finally settled on for him:

Now, go ahead and do the other eye, but remember, the settings might not be the same as for his right eye. Just play with it until you get a natural look. The problem you will have with his second eye is positioning the glint so that it's where it's supposed to be. We don't want him to look wall-eyed! I changed the glint size to 40 for the second eye and here is the final result.

Have fun with this. It's not magic...it's just playing around until you get the desired effect.

Email me if you have any questions.
